Locating Information at Lingnan: Finding Statistics
From Libwiki
Tips for searching statistical publications in the Library catalogue: You may search for statistical publications using the Library catalogue by conducting a keyword search. For example, hong kong and statistics and education
We can get more precise results by using subject search with the format
topic(s) -- geographic location -- statistics
For example: education -- hong kong -- statistics
However, if the topic(s) are often very specific and we shall miss some useful publications. For example, the above subject search will not be able to find a publication called Enrolment Survey published by the Hong Kong Education Department because its subject is school enrolment -- hong kong -- statistics.
To improve the search results, we can use advanced keyword search like this: s:(hong kong and statistics) and (education). This search uses the s: qualifier of the keyword search meaning that the keywords hong kong and statistics must appear somewhere in the subjects while the keyword education can appear in other parts of the record including the title, author, subject or notes fields.
Note: If you are using the exact subject format, you also want to consider the variations in geographic location representations. For example, if you are searching HKALL, be sure to search both education -- hong kong -- statistics and education -- china -- hong kong -- statistics because different libraries may use Hong Kong or China Hong Kong differently.
In addition to print copies, a lot of statistical data from government organizations or international organizations is now available in electronic format through Library-subscribed databases and / or free Internet access. See Electronic Databases / Statistical Yearbooks.
